How To Blanch Tomatoes

A quick and easy way to remove the skin from tomatoes is using the blanching method. Many dishes and sauces often require the removal of the skin before the tomatoes are used in cooking.

Please follow the steps along with our “How To” video.

Using a suitable pot, add hot water and bring this to a simmer. Once simmer set your cooking appliance to a low setting.

Using a sharp knife, you need to cut an X on the bottom of each tomato.

Using a slotted spoon, lower each tomato into the hot water, taking care as the water is hot as you gently lower each tomato into the water.

It will take a few minutes to blanch; a good indication will be to see the skin lifting and separating from where you made the X cut. Blanching will take around 2 minutes or until you see that the skin is starting to lift off around the X slit.

Using a slotted spoon, carefully transfer the tomatoes into the cold / ice water bowl to stop the cooking process.

Allow the tomatoes to cool and only when they are cool enough to handle, carefully pull their skin off.

Additional step: Slice the tomato in half and carefully cut out the core.
